Sadly we report the news of the recent death of Walter Fitzgibbon a founder member of Cork Chess Club. Walter passed away peacefully on 5th January. Walter was prominent in Cork Chess for many decades and encouraged many of Cork's strong chess players along the way.
A minute's silence was observed before the start of Round 6 of the Munter League last Sunday as a mark of respect for Walter's contribution to Munster Chess. We offer our sympathies to Walter's family.
May he rest in peace.
Rounds 7 and 8 of Division 1 of the Munster League and Rounds 3 and 4 of Division 2 have been rescheduled to Sunday 7th February. This was caused by a combination of difficulty in finalising the venues for the original date and the fact that the dates also clashed with the Gonzaga Classic.
The Division 1 matches involving Cork A, CCYMS, Sarsfield and Ennis B will be played at Springfort Hall, NewTwoPotHouse near Mallow. The Division 2 matches between Cork B and Dungarvan will be played at the same venue.
The Division 1 matches involving Adare, Limerick A, Tralee and Ennis A will be played at Savoy Hotel, Henry Street, Limerick. The Division 2 matches between Charleville and Limerick B will be played at the same venue.
As usual the first set of matches are scheduled for 12:00 with the later matches at 5:00 pm.
I would also like to confirm that Mallow are not playing in Division 2 this year.
Frank Noonan has asked players to please check if his clock has been mixed up with their equipment. He had lent it for another game but was unable to find it afterwards.
I will update the schedule documents shortly. Finally Thank You to all the team captains for ensuring the results were submitted on time.
And now we announce something completely new!! The MCU Club Knockout Competition has been organised by Alan Salsac to provide an additional less formal competition for club teams involved in the Munster Leagues. The format is double knockout and all the details are explained here.
We hope you enjoy this new opportunity for slightly less serious club competition.
