Munster Championship 2016

Overall this was a very competitive tournament as can be judged by the scoring. Round 1 went pretty much according to rating except for Gerry McCarthy drawing with Rory Quinn on Board 2.

In Round 2 Rory suffered a second setback losing to Piotr. So by Round 3 only Philip Short, Paul Walsh and Eric Salsac were on full points. The wisdom of Swiss Master saw Philip getting White against Paul Walsh while Eric had White against Piotr on Board 2. I am assured by Gerry Graham the Swiss Master knew what it was doing and had not sufferd from a vodka on keyboard mishap.

Paul Walsh drew with Philip Short to keep hist title defence on track. Piotr defeated Eric to catch up with the leaders.

The final round line up saw Gerry McCarthy(3) against Paul Walsh(3.5) on Board 1. Philip Short(3.5) versus Rory Quinn(2.5) on Board 2. Piotr Leichert(2.5) played Kevin James(2.5) on Board 3.

For the second year Rory Quinn beat Philip Short with Black (the games will be available in pgn shortly for those who want the recipe!!) and this opened the door for Paul Walsh to retain his title with a draw shortly afterward. Piotr won the battle with Kevin James to join the group in second place.

Joe Browne Cup Winners 2016

Congratulations Erick McPherson and P.J. O'Reilly

Like the Munster Championship the Joe Browne Cup also provided a close finish.

Eric McPherson won a blitz playoff game against P. J. O'Reilly after both finished on 4.5 out of six rounds. So Eric gets the title and cup but both were deserving winners having gone through six rounds undefeated. They drew their individual game in round 4.

Eric is proudly holding the cup in the center of the photo with P. J. to Eric's right.

On the right of the photo are Kerry Tyrell (with beard) playing in his first tournament and the vastly more experienced James Naughton (smaller guy on the right) who were joint third.

The grading prize was won by Con Kirby (in green on the left).

Congratulations to all of them.
